[ale] can't login

Is your /home on LVM?  If so, snapshot the volume and remove dot files
one by one until you can successfully login again.  Then remove (or
edit!) the one that is the problem.  It can take a while to narrow it
down that way, but then you'd have a cause (something to report a bug
about) as well as a proper fix.
