[ale] screwing up the UI

Hi Damon,
I think I'm just going to keep what I have for now. I may try some of
these other alternatives in VM's. I think I said Gnome shell once when I
meant Gnome. I really don't know what Gnome shell is. For the moment,
I'm just glad to have the machine running.
