I can't be sure but I think that someone else had a similar problem.

Try a 32-bit install CD and see if that works.

If 32-bit works, but 64-bit does not, I would be very interested in
helping troubleshoot, if you don't mind bringing the system here (and if
your system still has that silly legacy technology known as a serial
port...)
