Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for -- everything is working
as it should now.

I'm not sure why, but the source address that the BIND system on the
slave was using wasn't very deterministic.  I am guessing that the local
endpoint for a standard ephemeral connection is probably chosen at least
partly at random, or it could be that it might depend on the order in
which addresses were assigned to the interface or something, not sure...
but this fixed it!
