[ale] OT: Tracking on Android

Hi Chris,

My wife and I both use first generation Droids with Verizon and we use Google Latitude. Based on my testing if my wife's location is stale based on Google Latitude I can send a check in request and her phone automatically updates her location. It seems something like a ping request from what I can see. I've been told however that not all Android based phones support the automatic location update when a check in request is sent.

You should be able to open the Google Maps application and friend your wife on Google Latitude. From there you simply go into the latitude menu in Maps to see her location. You can also set real time updating (up to 60 minutes) to track her, however from my experience I sometimes have to send new check in requests to my wife to get her location to update.

I'll bet there are better applications out there that do the same but for me the Maps application has worked out fine and my wife doesn't have to do anything other than be setup with a Latitude enabled account.

Good luck with whatever route you take.
