I really question the benefit of taking data that usually comes as email and
transferring it to an _Instant_ Message when your complaint is that the
emails are extraneous.

Sounds to me like you would be better of setting up an email list server
exactly like this one and having the people who wish to receive less emails
just use the archive page, or subscribe to only the daily suggest. If you
have a bunch of email types that you want to thin out, set up multiple lists
on the same list server. (like ale vs. ale-jobs) Then you could write a
simple dashboard script that would always display the N most recent emails
on all the lists.
