I was thinking of trying other virtualization solutions under linux but my
department has just gotten into VMWare in a big way. I neglected to mention
that I am actually trying to kill 3 birds with one stone. I had VMWare
server2 working at one point and it helped me a little (but only a little)
when trying to pick up VMWare ESX. Still, and I hate to say this but when
you're blind, every little edge counts. Its painful to see the really
juicy assignments go to guys you know you could run circles around if you
weren't blind.
About 3 years ago, I was trying to set up a VMWare ESX cluster and I ran the
installer on a serial console. But it had a splash screen right at the start
and you had to click the mouse to get past it. Obviously, there's no mouse
on a serial console. So I couldn't do the install and the next thing I know,
somebody else is responsible for our VMWare cluster. That's why I spend my
evenings and weekends improving my skill set. I know all good systems admins
do that but for me, its especially important.
Well, anyway, I might be willing to sacrifice VMWare for another
virtualization solution if it works well. I'm just kind of hoping to pick up
a few things about VMWare while I'm working on this whole Windows domain
thing. But probably all I'd get out of VMWare Workstation that would
translate to ESX is some terminology.
