Also I might mention, I was able to successfully run the Arduino IDE via
an OpenVZ container. When I first started messing with the Arduino I
was running 8.04 but there was a bug in the compiler that wasn't fixed
until 10.04, so I booted a virtual 10.04 session, configured it to have
access to the USB port and it worked. You could do the same, except
they've decided to stop supporting OpenVZ in favor of the buggy and
unusable KVM. :( For that reason I'm going to have to abandon Ubuntu.
