[ale] encryption on Mac/BSD

Installed Gnugpg (or is it Gnupgp?) on my wife's Mac laptop.  The software 
is there, but when I try to do anything -- like create a key pair, it 
tells me it is running, but doesn't actually do anything.
No man file was installed, and  <pgp --help> doesn't do anything either.
Clues would be appreciated.
