I have a Toshiba NB255 that came with Windows 7 Starter.
I booted with an openSUSE 11.4 live trial USB and used it to install the OS. The installation allowed me to pick the community distros, and when I got through, everything worked with no tweaking. Camera, sound, wireless & wired network, touchpad and display all functioned perfectly.
It has a dual core 1GH atom processor, 1GB RAM and a 250GB drive.
I run a full linux distro with all the apps I have on my full size notebook.
I think it ran around $300, but I won it as a door prize at a conference, so I don't know for sure.

This is a wonderful idea - the only issue is that I'm a broke college student without a car, so I can't get very far. Still, there's several places that may at least have something similar enough for me to test it. I'll see what I can do. H
owever, if someone more experienced with laptop hardware could take a look at that memory for me in the mean time, and let me know if it's the right size/etc I'd really appreciate it. It all looks right to me, the comments on newegg revealed that, while it would theoretically support DDR3, the slot is actually for DDR2 667, which I believe is what I had posted.
Also, while I know my desktop allows booting from a USB drive, how likely (or unlikely) is a netbook to offer this same functionality?
Thanks!
Tim

One thing that I would try if I wanted to get a touchscreen notebook is bring a Live-Dvd or Live-Cd of the Linux distro you want to use.
Then just got to frys, or any other place and reboot it into the live linux cd. You may have to stop by the forums and ask if the touchscreen packages are installed by default or not on the live distro, but it would be an excellent quick test.

Hello, my name is Timothy Sassone, and I have a couple quick
questions. I am looking to purchase a new, portable computer to
replace my 6-year-old laptop - ideally something about netbook sized,
under $500, and which would work well with a Linux disto as the only
OS. While perusing newegg for ideas, I ran across one of the
"netvertable" systems - Asus Eee PC T101MT (link below signature). I
had considered the Eee Pad Transformer, but decided against it due to
the difficulty in replacing the Android OS with a full Linux distro,
so a netbook/tablet convertible seems a good compromise, particularly
as I've heard good things about Ubuntu's touch-screen support lately
(particularly as of v. 11, though I can't say I've looked into it much
myself as of yet).
Would this "netvertable" work well with Linux? If so, how difficult
would it be to set up the touch-screen capabilities? If not, do you
have any other suggestions for similar systems (hard price-limit of
$500)? Is there anything else I should know before I purchase the
system?
In addition to the computer itself, I would like to look into
upgrading the RAM to 2GB (comes with 1GB) - I've done this on my
desktop already, but, having also tried to perform repairs on my old
laptop, I'm not quite so confident in my skills there. Would the
memory I have linked below work with the Eee PC T101MT?
Thank you for your time,
Timothy Sassone
