[ale] Using Open Source for Electronic Music: Artist Talk and Concert, Sept. 13th at Eyedrum

As one of my eclectic volunteer activities I do audio and
media engineering for the Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery
<http:eyedrum.org>.  In addition to sound support at their
shows, I serve on the Music Committee which screens and
schedules a very unique programming mix of musical
performances that can't be found in the mainstream.
I've recently been helping with arrangements for a music
event that may have a lot of crossover interest for people
in the electronic music,  Linux / FLOSS and "maker"
communities, or to anyone who would appreciate a
unique, meditative, deep listening concert experience:

Next Monday, Sept. 13th, Eyedrum is featuring Nathaniel
Bartlett, a modern classical composer and musician
whose performances mix the rich, natural sounds of his
5 octave marimba with sophisticated digital effects
processing and triggered electronic soundscapes
presented within the rich spacial environment of
8 speakers in spherical surround sound configuration.

Nathaniel has a sense of ethos about the accessibility
of his electronic music compositions and performance,
so he exclusively uses Free, Open Source software
and Operating Systems when generating the electronic
effects, soundscapes and spacial manipulations he
uses to enrich his virtuoso talents as a percussionist.

His 5 octave marimba is a unique instrument to
experience in concert  by itself, but his custom built
Linux computer system (dubbed "Atlas"), and his
software controlled surround sound system are
equally impressive.

The 9:00pm concert will be preceded by a free
Artists Talk / Q&A presentation from 7:30 - 8:30pm
where Mr. Bartlett will share the details of his
instruments, software, music and performance
style.

I had the pleasure of enjoying Nathaniel Bartlett
in concert when he performend at Eyedrum in
July, 2009.  It was an exceptional experience,
one I highly recommend to all music lovers
with any level of appreciation for classical or
electronic genres.
