Not always on the first one; many vendors claim that all their hardware
only works with Windows, because that is the only configuration that
they directly support.
Though price is one way to tell with a reasonable degree of certainty, I
have one way that I measure it: I find someone who has one and see if
it works. :-)
You can even get hardware modems that connect by way of USB. I need to
go look up the one that I found a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to be
purchasing it soon, because the modem built-in to my laptop only has a
driver for a particular 32-bit 2.6 kernel release, and I am *certainly*
not going to run that.
