Of course, if you want to fully archive your DVD and not transcode it, 
then dd is your best friend ever:

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/me/movie_backup.iso

Then, when you need to read it:

mount -o loop /home/me/movie_backup.iso /mnt/movie_backup


Hope you have lots of disk space!
