[ale] Do people still roll their own Linux desktops?

Exactly the reason I buy built and not build.  My current desktop is a
Compaq I bought 12/2008 from CompUSA that was going out of business.
Paid $300 for it.  

I no longer use my desktop for development.  I run Evolution, Firefox,
and about 10+ xterm windows into other systems.  Occasionally I'll run
vmplayer or dosemu.  I run the occasional ham application as well.  My
desktop never gets a work out.

My development systems primarily come from MBX and they build to spec.
