It is called necessity.

Think about us that started with Linux near the beginning.   There were
no GUI configuration programs.  There was no Ubuntu to make most of the
hardware just work.  We used vi to configure X.  We compiled a kernel
specific to our computer.  Out of necessity we became masters of the OS
and today, now that Linux is basically a walk in the park, it was a huge
benefit to us.  When the "easy to use" disiti fails to be plug-n-play we
can usually work around it.
