[ale] USB device not configuring

I have a radio modem that has a USB interface.  I'm trying to get it to 
communicate on Linux, but I get the following from dmesg when I plug it in:

In order to get that far I had to
  modprobe ftdi_sio

However it's not assigning a /dev entry to the device.  I know generic 
USB works OK since when I hook  up another device with a serial chip I 
get this in dmesg:

So what might I need to do to get this thing working?  I'm running 
Ubuntu 8.04.2 kernel 2.6.24-24-generic.

sudo lsusb

It becomes com6 on Windows, so I know the cable/modem are OK
