Given the importance of this event it's been astonishing to me how
difficult was is to find a decent pool of basic facts about what
happened, and what the Deepwater Horizon rig actually represents.
Most of the reporting is politics, noise, and play by play on the
capping attempts which often read like sportscasting.

It's an unprecedented operation in a number of ways.  It's the deepest
oil well in history, for instance (actually kudos to Wikipedia for
having that near the top of their article ... it's seldom mentioned by
most of the press).  Given the fact that it's an extreme outlier in
terms of environmental conditions, the level of cluelessness at both
BP and within the government shouldn't be surprising.
