[ale] Sound not working in Jaunty

I problem is complicated by having two sound cards. I had to put the
SB Live card in to get sound working on Hardy. Everything looks just
wonderful. All the modules are there and the alsa-info.sh script
doesn't report anything out of the ordinary. I just get (almost) no sound.
I haven't figured out how to tell the various utilities which card to
use so I keep bouncing back and forth. Guess I should hook up two
speakers.
Anyway I say "Almost" because the little bobbldee beep when Ubuntu
starts up is produced. However nothing else every works. I did a cat
/dev/random >/dev/audio and a cat /dev/random >/dev/dsp and heard
nothing. I have no idea what to do next. Suggestions?
If anyone wants to look at the complete file, see

Thanks,
Jim.
