[ale] kubuntu 10.04 LTS mount external drive as user

Looks like you are mounting an ext2 or similar filesystem.  When the
filesystem actually captures file ownership in a way that Linux
understands, then the "user" mount option is meaningless, and the
uid=/gid= also don't work (as you found out).
