bash -c 'which time'
/usr/bin/time

bash -ic 'which time'
time is a shell keyword

The `time' that is vexing you is a shell keyword similar to `while',
the difference being that it's only implemented for interactive shells
in bash. Technically it is not considered a shell builtin, but
functionally that's what it amounts to.
