That should not have corrupted your data perse, but you clearly sent
variable size blocks to the drive.

So it is hardware dependent it you can restore that tape or not.

Can you get a tar listing of tape?  If that works your data should be good.

Fyi: mbuffer is a little known tool that I think works better than dd
for this.  I have the source somewhere.
