You can upgrade to CM 6.0 RC3 which is *very* nice.

Also, the new radio image may help.  The radio firmware that is on a
stock T-Mo firmware on the HTC Dream phones absolutely doesn't work as
well as the latest Dream firmware---I used to have more problems than I
do now (that is to say, none) when out in areas with little to no cell
phone coverage, for example.  It still doesn't work in known deadzones
(where there isn't any cell coverage from any tower from any company or
network), but it works much better in houses and big stores now.

I don't know of many places that T-Mo *actually* doesn't cover; I know
that some phones have better radio setups than others, though, so my
guess is that is also part of the problem.  That the radio is running
upgradeable firmware means that there are many metaphorical moving parts
that can break...
