[ale] ubuntu versus fedora

I've toyed with the idea of going with CentOS. I worked with it when
I was running a Beowulf cluster (the head ran RHEL, the nodes CentOS)
but my actual hands on with CentOS was minimal (the nodes were
expendable generic servers).

ubuntu's update cycle has always seemed a bit scary to me. I loaded
it because it seemed to support more hardware out of the box, and for
my desktop seemed to handle repartitioning more easily.
