GIS is a huge field and is a major driving force in Geography and many
levels of Earth and planetary science as well as large scale resource
management and emergency planning and....

Just as in operating systems and network processes there are standards
and arrogant companies that abuse the future expansion in those
standards, there are standards in GIS data as well and, as usual, the
open source tools do a much better job at performing to those
standards than some of the "market leaders".

Politicians may make strange bedfellows but beware of dropping the
soap around the business leaders.
