[ale] prevent shutdown when users logged in via ssh/nx?

That sounds like it would cause more problems than it is worth. Your
mother-in-law wouldn't ever be able to trust the "shutdown" action.
Personally, I see no reason to update the machine every time she uses
it. Chances are, she isn't noticing a difference. I suppose the best
solution I can recommend is to write a script that checks for updates
and downloads them if they are available (e.g. `apt-get update &&
apt-get -d upgrade`). Then all you have to do is install them when you
log in (`apt-get update && apt-get upgrade`).
