What I read:
Apples suck because they will die but if you paid extra for support it's better?
I certainly agree hardware support is cheap compared to time and materials (or replacements). However, if I saw every one of the Dell's we bought in our shop die (especially in pretty much the same way) I'd be pushing hard to move to something else.
Glass might be nice but it is useless if there's nothing being displayed.
It reminds me of years ago when I bought a Compaq 386 server and several Company 286 desktops for our Novell network (yes I'm that old). Having 12 MHz CPUs compared to the 8 MHz IBM PC-AT was great but the keyboards had many problems. The reseller brought in Compaq regional rep on my complaints and this guy tells me all the great technology they've put into their computers. I cut him off and said "if the human to computer interface [the keyboard] isn't working all that technology has zero value".

The most likely cause of the scratch is sand. Sand is everywhere. It
is extremely hard and sharp (usually silica, as in glass). My wife is
devastated by all the little scratches on her dark dark dark hardwood
floor that I tried to talk her out of. I have also had problems with
sand getting into the case for my blackberry and scratching it up.
That is what is so nice about Apple's glass display.

ONE MORE THING, since there is so much talk about quality/reliability
and Apple on this thread. So far the 2 how been mentioned, but not
associated. I'd like to go on the record and say, "If you are buying
an Apple computer, you are CRAZY not to buy Apple Care." At my company
we have had 12 MacBook Pros go bad. We bought the machines in waves
and got a few different revisions but pretty much the same
configuration. I'm pretty sure that all 12 of the ones that failed
were 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo with the GeForce 8600M GT. Everyone of them
failed in the same way; Loss of video, will not POST, sleep light
stays on. Apple refuses to acknowledge the problem. Apple Care gives
you the best support in the industry, by a huge margin. I've seen
enough Apple hardware go bad that I would never make the investment in
their hardware without Apple Care.
