I'm Happy with my Dell Studio 1737. It was less than $800 at Best Buy and
came with an upgraded battery that lasts 3 1/2 to 4 hours with desktop effects
turned on. Has a Broadcom wireless card that Ubuntu has drivers for and
Intel graphics.
