Thanks Jim.
Any idea how to assign [at the boot prompt by pressing <shift> ] a USB jumpdrive to be used for "root=" ?
Cordially,
Courtney

Framebuffer is a low-level video thing that writes video bits to video ram and to the graphics chip. You may need to try some different video= lines. I don't know isolinux details so you'll have to dig on their site for specific settings. But I'll bet that something like video=vga may get you a working screen.
You will need the framebuffer stuff compiled into the kernel to use it.
AH! You need to spec framebuffer mode like 788, etc. Knoppix has good details on this.
Found this on http://www.linuxsir.org/bbs/archive/index.php/t-168922.html:
My isolinux.cfg looks like this:
timeout 30
prompt 1
display menu.txt
default 1
label 1
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz
label 2
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz vga=788
label 3
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz vga=791
menu.txt is a simple text file that looks like:
1) Text Mode
2) 800x600 x 16bit colour
3) 1024x768 x 16bit colour
The user just enters '1' if they want text mode, 2 for 800x600 and so on.

Attempting to bootup a live Isolinux iso on a Dell Latitude C810 portable,
I'm getting a screen scrambled with almost impenetrable horizontal lines
though I can see the blurred GUI 'behind'.
I'd like to mount root on a USB jump drive.
What would be a manually entered [at bootup] command that should
get this thing going, please ?
I've tried [a guess] of :
/boot/linux append root=/dev/usb0 video=ask panic=10
but get nothing but kernel panics.
By the way, what's a framebuffer all about ?
Happy New Year !
