[ale] /proc/config.gz question

Kind of.

If your distribution kernel is patched and thus has extra configuration
items, those config items will be ignored since they don't exist, and
thus they will be discarded during 'make oldconfig'.  If your splash
screen is a kernel thing, and it's something that is a
distribution-specific patch, you'll lose that using a vanilla kernel.

If you're running Ubuntu, the boot splash is provided in userspace, so
you would be fine.  I don't know what other distributions that have
splash screens do for them, though.

Oh, and the [ale] is automatically added by the mailing list
software.  :)
