[ale] How can I mimic Apple's terrific screen graphics and text resolution ?

LCD monitors look _horrible_ below their native resolution. If you
want everything to be crisp and clear you need to use the monitor's
native resolution. If you have problems reading text at 1920x1200 you
can increase the font sizes. But running that monitor at 1280x1040 is
the root cause of your problem.
In addition, Apple renders text differently from Windows and X. Joel
gives a good rundown on the differences[1]. So matter what you do, OS
X is always going to be different from Windows and X. Also, X and
Windows do it different from each other. So you're never going to get
all three platforms to look exactly the same.
