heh, HAL isn't part of the kernel.  :-P

That said, use the HAL solution with care.  HAL is deprecated, to be
replaced with another set of abstractions called DeviceKit.  Also coming
are other *Kit libraries and their integration into various systems.
GNOME has, IIRC, already started switching from using HAL to DeviceKit
and PolicyKit.
