I should read carefully, sorry to bother you. But any way firmware upgrade was successful and I have dd-wrt micro image on my AP. My guess is first AP loads and boots kernel, sets up LAN interface and starts tftpd. After maybe 5 second tftpd shuts down and the the system continue with init process. So you really have small time window to do tftp upload.
