I case anyone searches this archive:
Specifying the /bin/sh variable did not fix the problem as I believed.

Finally, searching from a different angle I found this page:

The problem was with Streamripper and not Cron.

Putting either ">/dev/null 2>&1" or "--quiet" at the end of the crontab 
fixed the problem.

This does a great job of recording the radio broadcast stream.
