It sounds like you have a hardware problem.
That machine should still be under warranty, so contact HP and let them walk you
through the steps they'll require. They'll make a determination, and probably
either send you a brand-new harddrive preloaded or have you send the machine
back to them in the box they'll ship to you. They'll pay for shipping both
ways.

If your friend really doesn't need the data, just set her up with a loaner until
it gets back or the replacement drive arrives.
