I use igal for my pictures.  I load them into a local directory and run 
igal then transfer the directory to the web site.  Then I put a link in 
my html to that directory.  Pretty simple.

I use
igal --bigy 490 -r --www -y 122 -f -c
(twice, once to create a captions file)

Get igal from http://nanoheat.stanford.edu/epop/igal/

You can edit the index.html if you want to add features, etc.
