I agree completely.  I didn't want to frighten him tooooo much at once!  I too use the SitePoint books and find them great; however, I still think Ms. Lemay's book is a must-have for someone that is going to use HTML seriously.

But yes, CSS at the same time is certainly preferred.  And SitePoint is a fantastic place to start.
