In Putty Configuration for the session in which you want the tunnel just
go to the Connection -->ssh -->X11 area.

In there check the box for Enable X11 forwarding.

Save the session.

Login to the client with that selection (insure you are NOT explicitly
setting DISPLAY variable in /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, $HOME/.profile,
$HOME/.bashrc etc...).

Echo $DISPLAY

It should show something like localhost:10.0

Make sure you're running an X Windows tool on your workstation (e.g.
Exceed, Xming if it a Windows workstation etc...)

Type xterm in your putty window. If everything is correct it should
display an Xterm X-Windown back to your workstation. Just type exit in
the xterm window to close it down.

Personally I don't use XDMCP for full desktop display so if that is what
you are looking for you may need to do some other work. You don't need
to run startx to display X-Windows from your remote host to your
desktop. Startx is for starting X on the native console.

Subject: [ale] X over ssh to linux box using putty?

currently i can easily connect to a little test box that i have running.

i have been using putty to connect, update and install software on the
test box, but now i would like to type 'startx' and have fluxbox open in

the window.

what are others using to acquire an x-session over ssh?

i am using putty from my usb key and (if possible) would like to
continue with things being portable.

side note:
i have noticed that Midnight Commander doesn't render correctly and puts

those "a"s as borders, is there a fix? i have been using 'vfu' (and am
beginning to like it), but would prefer mc.

thanks folks,
preston
