I think it is more of windows vs. linux comparison.

Linux lets you get under the hood when things break.

With Windows all you can do is sit in the drivers seat and play with
the ignition key.

Modern ATA drives don't allow you under the hood, so spinrite has
limited things it can do fix a drive.
