[ale] issue with fonts, Fedora 8, Solaris application

Out on a limb here, but I bet your box is lacking the motif stuff. It's been
not installed by default for a while in the Linux world but Solaris still
uses it. Poke around your package manager for motif (there used to be a
mootif in linux). It will likely be a set of libs.
