Are you sure Linux has worked with Sata DVD burners for 5 years?
Seems like I still routinely see atapi bugs with sata (libata) under linux.
Bugzilla still shows 16 open (atapi or dvd) bugs in the sata subsystem.
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&short_desc_type=anywordssubstr&short_desc=atapi+dvd&component=Serial+ATA&long_desc_type=substring&long_desc=&kernel_version_type=allwordssubstr&kernel_version=&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=VERIFIED&bug_status=DEFERRED&bug_status=NEEDINFO&emailassigned_to1=1&emailtype1=substring&email1=&emailassigned_to2=1&emailreporter2=1&emailcc2=1&emailtype2=substring&email2=&bugidtype=include&bug_id=&chfieldfrom=&chfieldto=Now&chfieldvalue=®ression=both&cmdtype=doit&order=Reuse+same+sort+as+last+time&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0=
Personally I've just stuck to USB connected DVD burners and mine have
worked great, plus I can move them from machine to machine easily.
