If you're getting IP via DHCP then it is probably overwriting
resolv.conf when it gets the DHCP information.

You can disable that by modifying /etc/dhclient.conf on many distros.
Since Ubuntu is Debian based I'd think it was one of them.

In there add a line like:
supersede domain-name "yourdomain.com";
to specify domain name to search

You can also likely do:
supersede domain-name-servers "127.0.0.1 yourdnsserver1 your
dnsserver2";

Have done the former but not the latter so syntax may bee a little
different (maybe no quotes?).

Subject: [ale] KUbuntu Hardy doesn't seem to know my dns host.

How do I configure whatever to make it save my dns host between
reboots. The /etc/resolv.conf file say "Don't modify this file 'cause
it's being automatically generated" but it's generated with comments
only.

In menu Settings/Network DNS tab I have the ip address of the
nameserver, but apparently that's not enough.

Thanks,
Jim.
