I fixed THAT X problem with a symlink (noted at the end of this
posting).
NOW when I do startx, it complains:

I did diffs of my config files and didn't see anything obvious. I have
no idea what the above complaint is about. I'd be very grateful for any
ideas. My /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf follow.

THAT X problem was due to Mandrake not knowing where it put the
libglx.so file. I fixed it by doing:
cd /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions
ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia-current nvidea
