[ale] PPPo{EA} v NAT in DSL gateways

I doubt atnex is an option here (will check); I think all we
can get is AT&T and maybe HiWaay.

Looks like at least part of answer but I wish I could find
user manuals to various DSL gateways.  Apparently, changing the
Westell to bridge mode turns *off* its builtin sign-on support,
meaning "I" have to "do it myself."  :-/

Does someone make a DSL gateway that does the signon yet still
gives me the public IP?  I'd rather keep the signon in the
gateway & handle my own routing / firewalling, at least for now.
Last time I tried a Linksys box (WRT54G, a few years ago) it
would only communicate with my Intel netcards, not the D-Link
(21143-based) and I returned it.  I'd like to change from my
"computer based" firewall/NAT to something "appliance" based
but there are myriad choices and I don't know what'll *work*.

I also need more than just one "inside" IP (of course).
I've been doing this with (Charter) cablemodem for years &
years and it works fine (when it works...).  Quality v price
Just Isn't There now and I need to make some change somehow.
