[ale] Dell Inspiron 1501, USB, Linux kernel woes.

I reported this as a bug in Ubuntu, though it seems that I can replicate
it on other systems as well and that it is perhaps a generic kernel
issue.

Does anyone know what would cause the problems that I put up here?
