[ale] Font of Font Wisdom sought

Thanks to Corel PhotoPaint, I have a _large_ selection of true-type fonts
on my Lin/Win box, once all accessible from either environment. A couple
of upgrades seemed to have lost them to view until I re-introduced them to 
MsWin.

I'm having more trouble bringing them back on SuSE-9.3. Specifically I
don't know how to generate the index to use them in OpenOffice, etc. I
found HOW-TOs, but don't find the index-generating utilities, nor (so far
as I can see) the TT font server.

The actual font directories lie in FAT filespace visible to either Linux 
or MsWin: <shared_dir>/fonts/ttf/[a,b,...]

Could someone offer pointers or advice to revive my TTFs from Linux?  
(Packages to install, etc., would be fine.)
