What "brand name tax"? Yes, Apple machines are more expensive that the
cheap-o laptops you can find that are not Apples. But Apple isn't in
the bargain priced laptop market. If you actually compare specs,
you'll find the Apple machines are cheaper. However, that does not
extend to the hardware upgrades. Apple does rape your wallet if you
add extra RAM and such. I recommend going with the base amount of RAM
and buying more from someone else later.

I use a PowerBook G4. It's the first Apple machine I've ever owned. I
got it for school and to see how OS X fares. I love it. I can do all
the Unix type stuff I want, but still have a really good cohesive
desktop environment. That is, I can run console or X11 based Unix apps
alongside all of the OS X apps I use (and there is a lot of good
freeware for OS X). There is no need to boot to anothe OS. Hell, I
could run Gnome or KDE if I really felt like doing so.
