That is what I do on all of my drives that really need to be portable:
I put as small a partition as I can using FAT, put the ext2ifs software
on it, and partition the rest of the drive using ext3.  ext2ifs doesn't
support all of the features of ext3, but that's fine, since you can set
drives to be synchronously written to on Windows.  I think that is the
default, actually, if I am not mistaken?I know lots of people that have
this silly habit of writing data to their USB HD/Flash drives and then
yanking them out...
