The cheap tools (<$25) will give mediocre results and will be
frustrating to use. The pro quality are very solid and worth the extra
$$. My last set came from Home Depot and can crimp RJ45 and RJ11.

You can get different type of cable and plugs. Riser cable (in Cat5e
rating) is $55/1k' box at home depot. It is a solid core wire and is not
very flexible for use as patch cables. It is harder to make good
connections with multi-stranded wire. You need to get plugs designed for
multi-stranded wire.

The BEST investment in the tool kit is a cable tester. Build a cable and
test it. Every time. No exceptions.

Note: Pro-quality tools in a non-pro environment will last most of a
lifetime if cared for. The pros go through a set of cable crimpers in
about 8-12 months.
