Yes, you should then be able to install the kernel you have been
trying to install. For firewire, you want to enable 1394 OHCI I
believe. I'm not really sure. The only machine I have with firewire
capability is my PowerBook and I run OS X on that.

I usually run the latest 2.6 kernel. I have no idea what packages are
available because I roll my own. That's all up to you; I was just
trying to help get the package installation problem resolved.
