Side query for the Gentoo crowd:
Does Gentoo have a bootable CD/DVD that has all the parts needed to do
the full emerge/build routine? I'm envisioning a bootable source disk
with a scripted process that lays down the filesystem then builds the
gcc, then uses that gcc to build a kernel then reboots, finds the new
kernel and remounts the CD/DVD and starts the full system emerge?

They probably have it. I'm just to lazy/busy for the build process.
